LIHU‘E — In an effort to “reach out and help students,” Kaua‘i Community College and the Hawai‘i Society of Certified Public Accountants will be holding their seventh annual student mixer this week, said Albert Spencer, CPA and KCC professor.
There are many things students might not know upon entering college and the event is aimed at assisting those interested in enrolling in programs related to business and accounting, he said Thursday.
“Students have the opportunity to discover things they were unaware of.”
Faculty members from KCC, Maui Technology, Hawai‘i Pacific University and the University of Manoa, West O‘ahu and Hilo will share information pertaining to academic opportunities, financial aid and scholarships.
Warren Wee, a CPA and associate dean of College of Business Administration at Hawai‘i Pacific University, said his role will be to discuss educational opportunities, explain CPA certification requirements and share his experiences as a CPA.
“One of the goals of the mixer is to provide an opportunity for students who are majoring in accounting or are thinking about majoring in accounting to interact with professionals who are working in the career area that they are pursuing,” he said.
It’s also an opportunity for those wanting to learn about other avenues of business as well, including business technology and the hospitality industry, Spencer said.
Professionals from Grove Farm, Kaua‘i Marriott Resort & Beach Club and the National Tropical Botanical Gardens will be on hand to answer any questions in addition to representatives from the HSCPA on O‘ahu. They will be attending in order “to give you honest answers” about their fields, Spencer said.
“The mixer permits you to find out about different opportunities and pathways to move along in business,” he said.
It is a chance to meet people face to face that you might not otherwise be able to, he added.
Students and aspiring scholars can learn about internships, job prospects and also have the time to ask any questions about the requirements of school and what would be in store for them after graduation, Wee said.
This is an experience that can open many doors, Spencer said.
The event will be held from 3 to 6 p.m. Friday at the KCC One Stop Center.
