WAILUA — The Kuhio Highway one-lane former cane-haul bridge over the Wailua River, which accommodates northbound traffic, is closed from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. now through this Friday, Nov. 13, to allow for continued construction work, according to contractors.
In addition, contra-flow operations are those days from 6 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. Both lanes of the main bridge over the river remain open.
Motorists are urged to use caution while driving through the construction area, and to allow an extra 45 minutes to reach their destinations if traversing this section of the highway during the hours the cane-haul bridge will be closed.
Sewer relocation work continues as part of the cane-haul bridge widening project. Sewer work is scheduled to continue until some time in mid-December.
Construction on the entire bridge-widening project is expected to continue through the fall of 2010.
When work is completed, there will be two lanes of northbound traffic on the new makai bridge, and two lanes of southbound traffic on the mauka bridge.
The makai bridge will also have a bike-path lane.
