LIHU‘E — A 24-year-old Puhi man was arrested Saturday after being caught shoplifting and punching a Wal-mart employee in the face, a county press release states.
Brendon Cabinatan was arrested on suspicion of second-degree robbery, third-degree assault and shoplifting, and is being held in Kaua‘i Community Correctional Center for those charges as well as parole violation, the press release says.
According to a preliminary report, Cabinatan was caught shoplifting in Wal-Mart Saturday at around 3:50 p.m. and was confronted shortly afterward outside the store by an asset protection associate, the press release says.
Resisting the associate’s attempt to detain him, Cabinatan started running away, and then ran back to the scene and grabbed his sweatshirt from the store manager, the press release says.
Cabinatan tried to flee, but was again confronted by the asset protection associate near the store entrance. This time, he allegedly struck the associate in his face and a struggle ensued, the press release says.
Police officers arrived at the scene within minutes and arrested Cabinatan.
The asset protection associate sustained minor injuries and was treated at the scene by medics. He declined further treatment.
