LIHU‘E — Preston Ramson, 21, of Kalaheo, son of Kaua‘i Police Department officer Paddy Ramson, was found dead early Wednesday morning, apparently following a one-car traffic accident on Kaumuali‘i Highway in ‘Oma‘o, according to county sources.
The vehicle and victim were discovered by police at 1:37 a.m., said Mary Daubert, county public information officer. The death marks the island’s eighth traffic fatality this year.
Ramson was heading west on the highway in a Toyota multi-purpose vehicle when it ran off the road, hit a utility pole and the end of ‘Oma‘o Bridge, and then fell 40 feet to the bottom of a ravine, according to a preliminary report.
The highway was closed for accident investigation from the time of discovery until around 7:50 a.m., Daubert said in a press release.
Speed and alcohol may have been factors in this crash, according to the press release.
