LIHU‘E — A man with a history in court, and a history of missing court appointments, was all smiles in 5th Circuit Judge Randal Valenciano’s court Tuesday morning.
Gregory Sumio Perreira, who in a 2000 case got five years in prison for promoting dangerous drugs in the third degree, and probation for six months and mandatory anger-management class for a harassment plea (a family abuse charge was dropped) in a 2006 case, is back in court facing additional drug and other charges.
Perreira, 29, of Kapa‘a, represented by attorney Michael Soong, failed to appear for a Monday court date, Soong telling Valenciano his client thought both of his court dates were Tuesday in two separate cases.
Valenciano, who issued a bench warrant and revoked Perreira’s bail Monday but recalled the warrant and reinstated bail Tuesday, said Perreira has a history of missing court dates. “It’s important that you don’t miss your court dates,” Valenciano told Perreira.
Appearing jovial, Perreira admitted he has a history of missing court dates, and was smiling. “You shouldn’t be smiling because you’re on the edge,” Valenciano told Perreira.
Through Soong, Perreira pleaded not guilty and requested a jury trial, which Valenciano set for early 2010.
Soong said Perreira has another matter pending, and is seeking a global agreement, or plea agreement, “on all outstanding matters.”
Perreira’s most recent case involves charges of unauthorized control of a propelled vehicle (two counts) and driving without a license, with the older case involving charges of third-degree promotion of a dangerous drug and unlawful use of or possession with intent to use drug paraphernalia.
