To generate funds for PTSA, deposit the following items in the blue plastic cans all over campus. Drink containers labeled: HI-5¢, Hawai‘i 5¢; 2-liter (68 oz) or smaller; any non-alcoholic drinks i.e. water, juice, soda, tea, coffee, beer, malt beverages, some mixed spirits, some blended and alcohol free wines; material type, glass, plastic (number 1 and 2), aluminum and bi-metal.

Kaua‘i Community School for Adults
The school provides free tutoring for any adult over 18. Help in basic math, reading, writing or speaking is available. Every effort is made to provide a tutor in the area where the person lives. Tutors are available island-wide.

Parent meetings

Parent meetings for the remaining grade levels are scheduled for the following Tuesdays in September: Sept. 8, juniors and sophomores; Sept. 15, freshmen.
Meetings will be held in the school library. This is an opportunity for parents to meet teachers from each department. The evening’s agenda will include information regarding PTSA membership and activities, review of General Learner Outcomes (GLO), class level activities and career and college planning presented by counselors. Steve Watkins will lead a class designed for still camera enthusiasts. Learn to create eye-appealing photos using proven composition and exposure techniques. Bring your “point and shoot” or single lens reflex camera, instruction book and laptop (if you have one) to class. After the first half of class, you will take your own photographs to apply new skills. During the second part of class, review your work and discuss ways to refine new skills.
At the end of the course, there will be an opportunity to discuss specific questions about your camera or technical challenges. To register call 245-8318. Cost, $69.
Patriot’s Pen Essay
Deadline: Sept. 25
Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) are sponsoring a youth essay writing contest endorsed by the National Association of Secondary Principal’s contest criteria. Students in grades six, seven and eight may enter nationwide contest expressing their views on democracy or other subject matters. It must be 300 to 400 words based on the annual patriotic theme. The essay must be in the hands of the Kaua‘i VFW post by Sept. 25. The awards include local, (Kaua‘i) state and national prizes.
The top 45 national winners will receive a $1000 bond prize; the top 15, $1,500. Bond and the grand prize is $10,000. The Walk-A-Thon begins at 7 a.m. and follows an easy, 2.5 mile course in the shopping center area and concludes back at center stage. The event logistics are provided by the Kapa‘a High School Interact Club and they include refreshments for walkers and volunteers.

You are invited to a series of encouraging classes entitled “How to Nurture Children” led by Pastor Wayne Patton (father of two, grandfather of six, and school teacher for thirty-five years). Using timeless biblical truths and wonderful stories with honesty, warmth, and seasoned insights, he will impart hope to parents (and anyone working with children) in every stage of
parenting their children.
