KALAHEO — Swift action by a priest and a volunteer helped to prevent a fire from spreading in Kalaheo Friday afternoon.
According to a county press release, the two were working in the Holy Cross rectory when a fire ignited in the chapel at around 4:23 p.m. They quickly made their way to the chapel and attempted to put out the fire with a fire extinguisher and were getting ready to use a garden hose when Police Officer Dean Martin arrived.

Hanapepe firefighters also responded to the scene and provided assistance.
Damage to the 300 square foot chapel and its contents are estimated to be $120,000.
