Dozens of Kaua‘i churches join forces to host, “Facing Your Giants,” the 3rd Annual Youth Rally at 6 p.m. Aug. 14 at the Kaua‘i War Memorial Convention Hall.
Motivational speaker, Coach Joe Onosai of Word of Life Christian Academy on O‘ahu, will present. Onosai is a Samoan tribal prince and former member of the Dallas Cowboys.
Now the athletic director, football coach and throwing coach for track and field at the academy, the former University of Hawai‘i strong man helps guide youths.
“Joe came to New Hope in Kapa‘a as a speaker and he was so powerful,” said event organizer Roy Sasaki of Kaua‘i Island Ministries.
Onosai has had to face obstacles of his own that ultimately reinforced his connection to a Higher Power.
Sasaki said in a press release that Onosai’s inspiration will uplift and inspire youths, let them know there are people who want them to succeed and to encourage them to face their giants with courage, hope and the help of others.
“While brainstorming as a group we shared our concerns about what are the “giants” for teens,” Sasaki said. “Our list included fear, depression, drug use and suicide.”
This is the third year Janelle Leong of Hanapepe has participated.
“Last year I lead part of the worship,” she said. “There was a real sense of this being the teen’s event. It was good for them to see that there are other people like them out there who want to share Christianity.”
This uplifting and high-energy event will kick off with a dinner of chili and rice followed by a break-dance demonstration, prize drawing, music by a choir of 40 to 50 participants and Onosai’s presentation.
