Leo McCarthy of Hanalei shattered the previous two triathalon times, Sunday morning.
Working through flat surf and water conditions that were described as “really good,” McCarthy finished the TriKaua‘i Triathalon with an overall time of 1:05:59.
“This is the first year the triathalon joined Koloa Plantation Days and was met with record participation of 226 athletes,” said Melissa McFerrin, event coordinator for Koloa Plantation Days. “There were familiar faces and visitors from as far away as Germany and Australia.”
McFerrin said heading into the Sunday event, organizers said they had reached their maximum amount of participants and a waiting list had developed.
First female finisher honors went to Gabrielle Goodman who stopped the clock at 1:14:26.
Tom Potter, John Grout and Pierce Murphy, an Island School student who set the standard for long distance running in the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation events in 2008, made up the Men’s Relay team that finished with an overall 1:01:46, ahead of McCarthy, the first overall individual.
Monique Imberski, Pam Kruse and Lois Lutz made up the first Women’s Relay Team that crossed on a 1:17:44 performance.
Adriana Mendivil, Rick Beach and Janelle Timmons formed the first Mixed Relay team that finished 1:03:43.
Amanda Ferguson finished first in the 5K Run on a 21:27 performance, ahead of Larry Werstle who stopped the clock at 22:47.
Brian Carter, the triathalon organizer, said the event went off smoothly under great conditions.
“Everyone had a blast,” Carter said in an e-mail.
The Koloa Plantation Days is considered a major festival in Hawai‘i and will celebrate its 25th anniversary in 2010, McFerrin said.
