KALAHEO — Kathleen Cadiente bucketed an inbound play with 23 seconds left to clinch a 33-30 win, Monday night at the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center.
Cadiente, finishing with six points, paced the Kaulupono Girls squad that escaped from the Gee’s Angels in one of two Girls 17 and Under games hosted by the Kaua‘i Youth Basketball Association.
The see-saw matchup came down to a paltry seven-for-15 showing at the charity stripe in the final three minutes of play as Kaulupono had an opportunity to take the lead for good.
With less than 30 seconds showing, the Gee’s Angels pulled the match into its final stalemate, 30-30 when Leina‘ala McCabe was “nice and smooth” at the charity stripe, sinking both under the encouragement of Angels coach Cecil Gee.
But Cadiente answered with the inbound play at the 23-second mark and iced the win by sinking the tail end of a charity pair.
Despite the loss, the Gee’s Angels finish with the KYBA top seed heading into Thursday’s playoffs. The Angels finish the season 6-2 with 218 points allowed and 252 points scored.
Kaulupono improves to 2-6 for the No. 4 seed with 280 points allowed and 233 points scored.
Lorrine Lagoc-Agrade and Aiko Grande paced the Kaulupono win with nine points each followed by Cadiente and Kori Sakamoto each fielding six points.
Jessilyn Aki netted 10 points to lead the Angels, including a final-period, much-needed trey. She was followed by Leina‘ala McCabe adding seven points.
The Kapa‘a Titaz, suffering a 39-28 loss at the hands of Waimea, Monday, fill in the No. 2 and No. 3 seeds, respectively.
Waimea girls were afraid they would end up playing with only five girls just minutes before the tipoff against the Titaz, but as the seconds ticked down, more blueshirts appeared.
Erin Connelly, playing strong on the inside with sister Paige, paced the Waimea win on a dozen points, the blueshirts relying on its height advantage to capitalize.
Paige finished with eight points, and Brandee Victorino, taking the go-to spot in the second period, finished with five of her game-total six points in the final period.
Guard Cheyanne Duarte, playing opposite Jayme Jacinto, netted a trey and
a field goal in the first period, and Jacinto finished
with four second-quarter points.
Kira Nakamura tried to fire up the Kapa‘a Titaz with a pair of three-balls in the final period en route to her game-total 10 points. Layna Christian followed with nine points.
Despite the loss, the Kapa‘a Titaz finish with the No. 2 seed on a 5-3 standing with 248 points allowed and 249 points scored.
Waimea finishes the season 3-5 with 259 points allowed and 271 points scored, the highest tally in the league.
Kaleo Cummings and Clifton Asuncion each netted 11 points to lead the Kalepa Hillsiders to a 64-40 win over the Gee Unit in a single Boys 18 Over match.
Kekoa Prem and Reynante Villanueva finished with 10 and nine points, respectively, for the Gee Unit.
Playoffs for the Girls 17 and Under league start Thursday night with the Gee’s Angels tangling with Kaulupono starting at 7:30 p.m. followed by the Kapa‘a Titaz taking on Waimea in an 8:30 p.m. tipoff.
