PO‘IPU — Shaylee Orial picked up three wins in four rounds to take the 2009 Plantation Days Doubles Tennis tournament with a total of 26 points.
Bob Cohen finished in second place with 21 points followed by a four-way tie for third place with 20 points at the tournament played at the Kiahuna Swim & Tennis Club in Po‘ipu.
Tim Ballom, Kevin Mince, serving as Orial’s parter in the final round, Brea Bollom, and Paula Nishi were the four tied for third place.
Sarah Kukuno, Harry Dalsey and Kathy Stack, another of Orial’s partners, finished tied for fourth place with 19 points each.
Tournament format called for each player in the 32-player field to play eight games total with points being awarded following each round.
During the round, each player serves twice.
Following the four-round play, players had an opportunity to secure bonus points by participating in a tennis trivia quiz.
En route to the top position, Orial, one of the leading players for the Kaua‘i High School program during the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation spring season, finished with three of her four rounds earning seven points, the highest awarded in each round.
Opening with Rosanne Pitcher in Round 1, Orial finished with seven points and followed that in Round 3, partnering with Lois Ann Ell, and Round 4 where she partnered with Mince.
Cohen, in his second place showing, finished three rounds with five points following an opening round where he picked up six points, partnering with Stack, an eventual fourth place finisher.
He partnered with Rosemary Smythe in Round 2, Kukino, another fourth place finisher, in Round 3, and Terry Morrison in Round 4 for the five-point rounds.
The tournament was geared for Doubles players 3.0 and above in a round robin format with each player receiving an event T-shirt.
Prizes for the tournament included rackets, backpacks, gift certificates for restaurants and more.
