LIHU‘E — The Kaua‘i Marathon announced Tuesday that its self-imposed limit of 1,500 runners was very close to being reached and surpassed, according to a press release.
Bob Craver, co-race director, said that the organizers set a combined limit for the half and full marathon in order to ensure a “safe, world-class event” for their first year in existence.
According to Craver, marathons and half marathons in Hawai‘i tend to have high no-show numbers, according to historical figures. They say the average is 10 to 12 percent of registered runners fail to appear on the day. For this reason, the event will continue to accept entries until they reach about 1,700 total.
As of Tuesday, there were over 1,450 participants registered. Almost 900 of those are traveling from outside the state or country.
“Jeff Sacchini, founder and co-race director, is very happy with the warm reception the event has received by the national running community and the support it is receiving here on Kaua‘i,” said Craver.
Mayor Bernard Carvalho Jr. shares that sentiment and has high hopes for the event’s impact.
“We’re hopeful that the Kaua‘i Marathon will become our ‘signature’ event and something that people around the world look forward to every year,” he said. “The County is fully supportive and thanks to Mr. Sacchini for his extraordinary commitment to making this first year a huge success.”
Over 275 Kaua‘i residents are signed up for either the full or half marathon. The races will begin at 6 a.m. on Sept. 6, directly in front of Po‘ipu Shopping Village.
