KILAUEA — A suspect has been arrested by Kaua‘i police for allegedly attempting to burglarize Kilauea Bakery last month.
Benjamin Fanagfinay, 24, of Kilauea, was apprehended Monday afternoon after the vehicle he was traveling as a passenger in was stopped near the Princeville Shopping Center, a county press release said Wednesday.
Fanagfinay’s attempt was the bakery’s fourth break-in during the time span of about a year, but because of the comprehensive surveillance system owner Tom Pickett installed after the second burglary — along with fingerprints left behind — enough evidence was provided to help warrant the arrest.
“We did our part and basically followed the advice about putting up bars, securing the safe with cement, changing money handling procedures and putting in cameras and an alarm,” Pickett said in a phone interview Wednesday. “We got an excellent video.”
Though it took over a month to make the arrest, he is “happy they got out there and found him.”
“One of the key factors in arresting a suspect, from what I’ve learned, is that they (police) really want the case nailed down first,” he said.
No other suspects have been found in relation to the other break-ins his business previously endured, Pickett said, adding that it is his understanding that the third burglary case is still under investigation.
“One way or the other, people like this will get themselves arrested eventually anyway,” he said.
Pickett continues to keep his fingers crossed as break-in activity in Kilauea has reportedly been on the decline recently.
“Things are going well, we’re having a good season,” he said. “I’ve seen more support in Kilauea and I’m happy about that.”
