LIHU‘E — Nearly all of the chairpersons and vice-chairs of the county’s boards and commissions along with their support staff recently participated in a training session on managing meetings, a county news release said Tuesday.
The training was sponsored by the county’s Boards and Commissions Office in partnership with the Kaua‘i Chamber of Commerce and Leadership Kaua‘i.
“We were very pleased with the turnout at the recent training session, and truly appreciate the time spent by the chairs and vice-chairs of the boards and commissions in order to be better informed on how to effectively perform their duties and responsibilities,” said Mayor Bernard Carvalho Jr.
Included on the list of topics covered during the training were: the role and authority of the chair; how to manage a meeting; Robert’s Rules of Order; basic parliamentary procedures; guidelines for public participation; and strategies for potential challenges.
The highlight of the training included a segment in which the participants role-played in a mock meeting applying the principles and techniques they learned in the first portion of the class.

Established in 2006, the Boards and Commissions Office provides administrative and operational support to the various county boards and commissions.
The office is also responsible for planning, developing and coordinating orientation and training programs for boards and commission members regarding their powers, duties, functions and responsibilities under the County Charter.
