KALAHEO — Devon Takenaka finished with 20 points to lead Illmatic to a 65-51 win over the G-Unit in one of three games played in the Boys 18 and Over league, Sunday at the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center.
Takenaka, who joined Tab Matsumoto in referee-ing one of the younger Kaua‘i Youth Basketball Association matches earlier in the week, showed the other side of his basketball prowess, his score being the highest of the night.
Preston Keough finished with 16 points to lead the Kalepa Hillsiders to a 51-35 edge over Team 1, and in the final match pof the night, Notorious’s Lester Alacar matched R.J. Pilos with 14 points in Notorious’ 43-39 edge over Mixed Plate.
Joining Takenaka in the Illmatic victory, Ian Clements finished with 18 points and Matsumoto tucked in 12 points while Kekoa Prem, the strong guard for Kapa‘a High School during the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation season, led the G-Unit with 17 points. Erick Pedro added 13 points in the effort.
Following Keough’s lead for the Hillsiders, Travis Stine, returning from the Big Island, recently, finished with nine points in the win.
For Peter Rayno, the Hillsiders’ coach, the 18 and Over game ended a long day when his 14 Under Boys team earlier came back against a tenacious Ali‘i to capture the division title at the 2009 Merv Lopes Kaua‘i Hoops Classic.
Brendan McDaniels and Jed Balmidiano led the Team 1 effort with eight and six points, respectively.
Alacar and Darren Lapitan, a recent scholarship winner for the Kaua‘i Filipino Community Council, paced the Notorious win, Alacar netting 14 points and Lapitan adding seven marks.
Pilos finished with 14 points for Mixed Plate with Trent Thompson adding eight points.
KYBA action continues tonight when the Boys 14 Under title will be determined at the Kilauea Neighborhood Center starting at 6 p.m.
Richard Kaui, a former Kaua‘i boy, will have his daughters Kika and Keli‘i Kaui in action with the other players from Bellingham, Wash., in a goodwill series at the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center.
