PUHI — Team Central, the host of the 2009 Merv Lopes Kaua‘i Hoops Classic, came out gunning in the Boys 16 match to finish with a split on the second night of the tournament at Island School.
Working behind the drives of Joe Duronslet and Lewis Lindsey, who wowed the crowd with a turnaround jumper in traffic in the first half, Team Central topped Papalina 53-27 in the Boys 16 matchup.
Duronslet, who played for Kaua‘i High School during the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation season, returned to the court with more bulk and a strong drive to finish with a game-high 13 points followed by Lindsey, who played for Kapa‘a High School during the KIF season, with a dozen points. Brian Andres rounded out the Team Central leaderboard with nine points.
Brandon Palacio’s strong prescense on the inside led the Papalina effort with seven points followed by Donovan Harrison, who scored a game-high 14 points in the Boys 14s game, and finished with six points as the Team Central defense shut down the Papalina offensive effort.
Earlier in the evening, Papalina was a 39-26 winner over Team Central, led by Harrison’s game-high 14 points.
In that match, AJ Martinez joined Harrison with eight points and Vaughn Thompson, working the inside with a lot of hustle, added five points.
Team Central’s low post, Cameron Simao led the 14s with a dozen points. Aaron Moura finished with six points. Denmark Aladin and Jacob Corpuz each netted three.
The 2009 Merv Lopes Kaua‘i Hoops Classic continues through Sunday afternoon at the Island School gym and the public is invited to view the Kaua‘i teams and several off-island teams in action.
