Mahalo to Ron Kouchi (his son Egan’s grad party was last Sunday with special guest Mufi Hanneman) for the update on West Kaua‘i Mustang teams.
Ron said there was a WK Mustang team that took state in the early 80’s, but can only remember that Aaron Chun was one of the key players. Larry Moises was the director at that time, and there was no World Series, just the state win in Hawai‘i Kai.
Larry, former Kaua‘i Section Director and Hawai‘i Region Director, said Kekaha was the host team and Chico Frasco was the coach for that team.
Lianne Parongao (she was at the airport, Monday night) said her brother Kyle played on a WK Mustang All-Star team that took the state title in 1976. That team had Mason Makashima, David “Paday” Rita, Bruddah DeCosta, Darryl Unciano, and more.
Jabba Garcia was one of the opposing players, and Lianne cannot believe that it was 33 years ago.
Lianne said she was around six years old and remembers a team that had Ross Kagawa and Kirk Correa with Alfred Gaspar as one of the coaches.
She said it was exciting for the boys back then, and is excited about how successful the Lihu‘e team will become.
OK, back to the present — congratulations, Lihu‘e Mustang All-Stars!
