KEKAHA — Bicycle racing is coming to Kaua‘i this weekend as the first Kaua‘i Stage Race kicks off on Saturday, states a press release. The event, sponsored by the Tradewind Cycling Team, is a three-day series of USA Cycling sanctioned bicycle races being held in the Kekaha and Lihu‘e areas.
Stage 1 is the time trial, an 11-mile ride beginning at 9 a.m. Saturday, with riders beginning at Kekaha mile marker 27, heading to the Pacific Missile Range Facility and then returning. Riders will be separated by one-minute intervals.
Stage 2, the criterium, begins with the first heat at 3 p.m. Saturday at the Vidinha Stadium south parking lot. This first heat, or “A Heat,” lasts 60 minutes, plus an additional lap and is only for elite racers holding USA Cycling Annual Licenses, categories Senior Men 1, 2 or 3 and Master Men categories 1, 2 or 3.
The “B Heat” is for the rest of the male racers and will last 45 minutes plus a lap. The men will be divided into two under 50 and over 50 races. The “C Heat” will be the women’s and junior race, which will last for 30 minutes plus a lap.
Stage 3, the road race, will commence Sunday morning at 7:30 a.m. It will comprise a 5.3-mile course, beginning and ending just makai of Costco on Nuhou Road before the Pua Kea Golf Course entrance.
The road race circuit will go in a clockwise direction down Nawiliwili Road, past the piers on Wilcox/Kanoa/Wa‘apa Roads, then climbing up Hulemalu Road past the Menehune Fish Ponds. It then goes right onto Halehaka Road and left onto Nuhou Road to the finish area.
The “A Heat” will begin at 7:30 a.m. and riders will do 10 laps of the 5.3-mile course. The “B Heat” starts at 7:35 a.m. and will consist of seven laps. The “C Heat” begins at 7:40 a.m. and will be five laps.
Late registration is still available on race day up
until 30 minutes before the race starts at the start/finish tent. All racers must hold an annual USA Cycling License or purchase a One Day USA Cycling license to participate.
Racers may race in all three stages or any combination of races.
Awards will be presented to those who complete all three stages, as well as those who accrue the most points in one of five race categories.
