LIHU‘E — During the Hawai‘i Callaway Junior World Qualifier on June 11-12 at Kaua‘i Lagoons Golf Club, Hi‘ilani Rosa-Alana from Kapa‘a took part in the 9-10 Girls division, of which the top five finishers would gain entry to the Junior World Championships July 13-17 at Torrey Pines in San Diego, Calif.
On the first day of the two-day competition, Rosa-Alana shot an 81 on the par 58-course. That score left her 10 shots behind the fifth-place position.
She came back the following day and gave a much better performance, shooting a 66 for a 15-stroke improvement. It was the second-best score of the day, only behind division-leader Kristeena Locke’s 64 (Kahului).
Unfortunately, her score still left her one stroke behind fifth-place Alanis Sakuma. It seemed as though she would not be making the trip to Torrey Pines.
However, after the awards ceremony, she and her family received notification that Locke would not be heading to San Diego for the World Championships, which opened up a spot for the sixth-place finisher. Her huge second-round improvement moved her into the group of five who will go to compete later this month.
The other competitors in the 9-10 Girls to represent all the Hawaiian Islands will be Mari Nishiura (Mililani), Sydni Tokuyama (Kaneohe), Kristin Miyagi (Honolulu) and Sakuma (Aiea).
