KAPA‘A — Kekoa Prem capped a full day by playing with G-Unit in the last of six basketball games hosted by the Kaua‘i Youth Basketball Association Saturday.
Prem, a strong guard for the Kapa‘a High School Warriors in the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation, was up early, joining more than 500 participants at the first Mayor-a-thon at the Kapa‘a Beach Park, and following a hearty breakfast, capped his day on the basketball court at Kapa‘a High School.
Prem finished with 16 points and Ariel Lahip, normally a Westside player, added nine points in an effort that came up short, 52-37, against Mixed Plate that got 16 points each from Emery Souz and Kekoa Colipano, Prem’s teammate during the KIF season.
That was one of three Boys 18 and Over games that opened the KYBA B18O season.
Brendan McDaniels netted 12 points and Braxton Garma added 10 points as Team 1 soared past Notorious 48-21, the vanquished getting eight points from Lester Alacar.
In a contest featuring Illmatic, Ian Clements and Devon Takenaka ended with 17 and 15 points, respectively, in its 61-52 win over the Kalepa Hillsiders.
The yellowshirts, missing the services of its tall man, Travis Stine who was making his way back from the Big Island, finished with the Cummings brothers, Kaleo and Kapono, finishing with 16 and 15 points, respectively. Austin Simao also netted 16 points to herald the Kalepa effort.
Erin Garlie said it was fun, but tiring to be playing basketball.
Garlie led FNG with eight points in its 25-21 edge over the Kilauea Hui that was able to take the floor after a last-minute recruit joined its ranks just before game time.
Throughout the match, both teams jockeyed for the lead, FNG pulling ahead only in the final quarter.
Kapua Chandler paced the Hui effort with five points.
Balanced scoring by three Gee’s Angels pulled off a 37-29 showing over Waimea in one of two Girls Under 17 matches that opened the long Saturday afternoon.
Leinaala McCabe topped the Angels with nine points followed by Sanida Pahulehua and Jessilyn Aki adding eight points apiece. Cheyanne Duarte finished with a game-high 10 points to lead Waimea.
Mahea Hanie-Grace, the shooting guard for Kamikaze, donned the green of the Kapa‘a Titaz to lead that team to a 38-36 edge over Kaulupono, Hanie-Grace netting 13 points in the win.
Aiko Grande topped the Kaulupono effort with a game-high 15 points, all coming from bombs outside the three-point arc. Kelsey Cadiente, the sparkplug guard for the Kaua‘i High School Red Raiders during the KIF season, added eight points.
KYBA games continue Monday night with three games on tap at the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center starting at 6 p.m.
