Elsie Hoopii
Elsie Chong Hoopii died on May 27, 2009 in her home in Kealia at age 80. Born on July 30, 1928, she was a retired assistant manager of Plantation Hale.
She was preceded in death by her husband John Healaniku Hoopii, Sr.
She is survived by her daughter Healani (Gordon) Sanchez, son John (Mapuana) Hoopii, Jr., brothers Herman Chong and Albert (Joycelin) Chong), sisters Pearl Silva and Mary Jane Akana, 11 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.
A celebration of her life will be held at 10 a.m., on June 27, at the Hoopii residence located at 2399 Kamole Road, in Kealia.
Arrangements are being handled by Borthwick Kaua‘i Mortuary.
Phyllis Aquino
Phyllis Carol Aquino died on June 3, 2009 in Las Vegas, Nev. at the age of 60.
Born on April 1, 1949 in Washington D.C., she was a car dealership warranty administrator.
She was preceded in death by daughter Tammy Aquino.
She is survived by husband Demetrio “Don” Aquino, stepson Alvin (Doreen) Aquino and Mother Simy (Wesley) Bryant all of Las Vegas, brothers Stephen Bender of Washington D.C., Daniel and Timothy Tucker of Hawai‘i and Francis Tucker of Las Vegas.
Previous memorial services were held on June 13, at Palm Mortuary, Las Vegas.
Hawai‘i memorial services will be held Wednesday, July 1, at Diamond Head Memorial Park on O‘ahu, with graveside services at 10:30 a.m.
Evelyn Arinaga
Evelyn Kiyoko Asaoka Arinaga of Kealia died on June 20, 2009 at Wilcox Memorial Hospital at age 89. Born on Dec. 8, 1919, in Kapa‘a, she was a retired housekeeper at the Hotel Coral Reef.
She was preceded in death by husband Masashi Arinaga of Kealia.
She is survived by sons Stephen (Vivian) of Honolulu, Larry of Honolulu and Clayton (Althea Kalei) Arinaga of Kealia; daughter Pearl Meladish of Kapa‘a; brothers Kanao (Patsy) Asaoka of Lihu‘e and James (Nora) Uyeda of Las Vegas; sister Catherine (Harold) Niwa of Honolulu; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nephews, nieces, cousins and friends.
Services will be private.
Arrangements will be handled by Garden Island Mortuary, LTD.
