LIHU‘E — Hula students from Na Hula O Kaohikukapulani and Hula Hale O Keala had an opportunity to showcase their talent last weekend.
Performing at the 27th Annual Kaua‘i Hula Exhibition Saturday, the students showed off their skills for their parents and the public under the direction of kumu hula Kapu Kinimaka-Alquiza for Na Hula O Kaohikukapulani and Keala Senkus, Alquiza’s sister, for Hula Hale O Keala.
The ho‘ike for the two hula halau also featured a scaled-down version of a craft fair in the lobby of the Kaua‘i War Memorial Convention Hall as well as a full offering of food including an assortment of baked goods from the students’ families.
Kinimaka-Alquiza said the summer ho‘ike is one of two performed in collaboration with Hula Hale O Keala, the other being the annual Holiday Hula program that offers an opportunity for the hula dancers to celebrate the holidays in hula and song.
Na Hula O Kaohikukapulani also showcased the talents of its Merrie Monarch girls during the ho‘ike, the Westside-based halau having the distinction of being the only halau from Kaua‘i to be represented at the annual hula extravaganza on the Big Island earlier this year.
For those who want to see more of the hula students’ prowess in both kahiko and auwana style dancing, Kinimaka-Alquiza said they are scheduled to perform at the Kaua‘i Hospice’s “Concert in the Sky” on July 4.
