Congratulations to Kaua‘i County Councilman Derek Kawakami and all of the County Council’s support staff for doing a great job hosting the 2009 Hawai‘i State Association of Counties Annual Conference last week.
Lani Kawahara was at the Lihu‘e bon dance with some of the Outer Island councilmen (one wanted malasada, the other went after flying saucers), and everyone was still talking about Daryl Kaneshiro’s opening night party with Dickie Chang and Kaua‘i Mayor Bernard Carvalho Jr. doing some of the entertainment.
Derek is the vice president of HSAC and president Nestor Garcia (he’s no stranger to Kaua‘i) said Derek will be the president next year.
In spite of the rain, the Lihu‘e Hongwanji bon dance was a success with a lot of people braving the weather. Kelvin Moniz (he was refereeing at K-PAL flag football) said the Lions Club has about 25 students from 17 countries coming here on July 7, and one of their activities is a stop at the Kapa‘a Jodo Mission bon dance. Roy Nishida was also at flag football and he’ll be checking out UH coach Greg McMackin and the football clinics starting July 6.
Hats off to Jeff Venzon and Leland Tottori on a great basketball tournament (three nail-biters in three days)! OK, it’s time to get back to the KYBA action.
