KALAHEO — Gee’s Angels finished 3 for 4 from the foul line in the fourth period on Monday.
That proved the difference in the final 15 seconds of play as Lauren Claypoole’s half of a charity pair gave the Gee’s Angels a 32-31 win over Kaulupono in the first of two Girls Under 14 games played at the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center.
Kristle Henry, the fast-moving guard from Kamikaze, shared the spotlight with Mahea Hanie-Grace to finish with 16 points in leading the Kamikaze to a 37-20 win over Waimea in the second game.
The Gee’s Angels and Kaulupono matchup proved to be a see-saw battle with the lead changing throughout the second half after Kaulupono came back from a 7-5 first-quarter deficit to outgun the Angels 12-8 behind a three-ball from Nicky Banasihan and two baskets from Casey Anacleto for a 17-15 halftime lead.
But the Angels cut the lead to one point with an
8-7 third quarter before pulling ahead with a 9-7 final period behind guard Reggie McCabe’s six second-half goals. Overall, McCabe finished with a game-high 13 points followed by Claypoole’s seven points (five of six at the free throw line).
Claypoole’s value came under the boards where she matched up against Sanoe Kaohelaulii for rebounds, Kahohelaulii contributing a pair for the Kaulupono effort.
Arrissa Thronas, playing key in the inside, topped the Kaulupono scoring with nine points followed by Banasihan and Anacleto each adding six points.
“This has got to be one of our worst games,” said Cheyanne Duarte who was held to just one point coming in the first quarter. “But we’re getting better because the games (against Gee’s Angels) are getting closer.”
In the final three minutes of play, Kaulupono was held scoreless as they tried to penetrate the inside that was strongly anchored by Angels Raquelle Matayoshi and Claypoole.
Waimea’s Bristy-Ann Agu and Paige Connelly played key roles in trying to stop the inside game by Kamikaze guards Mahea Hanie-Grace and Kristle Henry.
But where one was stopped, the other opened and Henry finished with a game-high 16 points in the Kamikaze’s win that came on quick ball-handling. Hanie-Grace added nine points in the win.
Waimea got eight points from Agu and another seven marks from Connelly, both relying on the movement of guard Marissa Hesapene to get the ball to the inside post. Hesapene finished with a pair and Tianalee Apilado finished with three in the effort.
The next KYBA game is a single match Friday night featuring the Kaulupono and Waimea. Saturday’s game, another single match, moves to the Bernice Hundley Gym and featuring the Gee’s Angels against the Kapa‘a Titaz starting at 2 p.m.
