Today’s lecture, “Ha ‘Ena‘ena I Ka La: Portals of Knowledge to the Hawaiian Universe” is free of charge. Saturday the workshop “Ka ‘Aha Kapu: Interlacing Connections of the ‘sha cord” has a fee of $45. Presenters are Kehaulani Kekua, Halau Palaihiwa O Kaipuwai, ‘Aikane Alapa‘i, Alaka‘i and Halau Palaihiwa O Kaipuwai.
Ancestral stories, chants and traditions of harnessing mana or spiritual power and energy from the sun and heavens will be shared as a prelude to this year’s summer solstice. The ancient philosophy of “aha” and the principal practices of malama or responsible stewardship of Hawai‘i’s life-giving elements and sustainable resources will used to navigate this twp-part program. How the ancients utilized the sacred connections and nuances of ‘aha to restore health, life and balance with seasonal solstice and equinox alignments of the sun will also be shared. The workshop, “Ka ‘Aha Kapu.” will provide hands-on instruction of traditional interlacing methods of working with two to eight strands of kaula (cordage) to create ‘aha for practical, cultural and spiritual use. Workshop includes all activities, instruction, handouts and materials. Participants will also be taught selected chants appropriate for solstice observances. Registration is required for the workshop.

Other primary characters include Jeff Marshall (Smokey), Morgan Liddell (The Pastor), Delia Valentin (Granny), Dottie Bekeart (Madame Rosey Lips) and love interest/hero, Ralph Guest (Doug Deeper). Musical direction is by Sam Alfiler.

WIT (Women in Theatre) invites actors to audition for the “Ten Minute Play Festival” to be performed at Kaua‘i Community College Performing Arts Center August 7, 8 and 9. Get 10 minutes of fame — this is a place where experienced talent and new faces converge. Students, new actors and those experienced folks who are “too busy” for a full length dramatic commitment or want to “break out of the mold” and try something new are all encouraged to try out for the 30-plus parts available. There is a wide range of characters to play for all ages 13 and up and actors may be cast in multiple roles.
This festival premiered in 2007. This year there are 14 new original plays written in Hawai‘i ranging from Shakespeare send-ups to local style comedic and dramatic moments, folktales and more including both well known and new playwrights. Plays are performed over three days, with a “Hana Hou” performance on Sunday with audience choice favorites selected by the audience.
Auditions will be held at the Hukilau Lanai in Kapa‘a private dining room.
Arrive promptly by 2 p.m. Directors of the different plays will be present for you to meet. For audition information and interested directors call Romey Curtis, 826-9755 or e-mail romeycurtis@aol.com. To volunteer in some other capacity call Melissa McFerrin, 652-3217 or e-mail mmcferri@yahoo.com.
