Alternative
education on Kaua‘i
Hawai‘i Technology Academy will expand its services to Kaua‘i. This hybrid public charter school will begin its second year July 2009.
HTA serves all grades except twelfth. The hybrid model of schooling combines classroom and virtual learning programs that allow students to receive individualized programs using an engaging web-based curriculum and interactive technology.
Already over 900 students have applied for the 500 slots available for the upcoming school year. There will be 80 students on Kaua‘i at the learning center located in the Princeville area.
Students in HTA learn outside a traditional school building but use the Internet to access their lessons and stay connected to their teachers and schoolmates. Hawai‘i-certified teachers work in close partnership with parents to focus on the individual needs of every child. Teachers assign lessons and provide instruction and guidance, while parents help support and encourage students as they progress through their lessons. Families and teachers interact via e-mail, web-based classrooms, online discussions and phone.
