PO‘IPU — A long period south swell that generated surf heights of 5 to 8 feet, the return of the trades and a warm sun combined with the final day of school to send surfers out at Helicopter’s break Monday.
The National Weather Service issued a high surf advisory that remains in effect until Wednesday for the swell that could produce dangerous rip currents and some localized beach erosion along south-facing shores of all the Hawaiian Islands.
But that swell is also good news for the Kaua‘i Bodyboarding Association that has scheduled its annual Shipwreck’s contest on June 20 starting at 6:30 a.m. for registration and 7:30 a.m. for the first heats.
The contest is open to all bodyboarders on the island with an entry fee of $30 for beach entries, or $25 early registration.
Event forms can be printed from the KBA site at www.myspace.com/kauaibodyboardingassoc, or by calling 635-7441.
KBA will also host the third stop of the United States Bodyboarding Association IBA World Tour on June 30.
Other events on the KBA calendar include a contest scheduled for Aug. 15 at Helicopter’s in Po‘ipu and a final contest for the year on Oct. 10 at Targets in Kekaha.
