LIHU‘E — Two dollars was magic for Max Klutke on Saturday.
That amount earned him an additional $250 gift card from Big Save as the winner of the three-minute $500 shopping spree.
Klutke was pitted against David Mona, an employee with the Grand Hyatt Kaua‘i Resort and Spa, as winners of top fundraising during the annual Visitor Industry Charity Walk.
When the totals were rang up, Klutke was determined the winner of the additional gift card with his total amounting to $498 compared with Mona’s $270.
Both shoppers were allowed a helper and the closest to $500 without exceeding the amount qualified for the additional gift card. Shoppers were not allowed the use of shopping carts and could not take more than two of any item.
“I spent some of my lunch hours checking out the place,” Klutke said. “That helped.”
Mona, who lives on the Westside, said he never had a chance to come and check out the store prior to the spree.
Sandi Kato-Klutke of the Hawai‘i Hotel and Lodging Association said both men were second and third place in fundraising efforts with Mona raising $1,882 and Klutke turning in $1,434 at the annual fundraising charity walk.
Jeanette Ridings was the top individual fundraiser for the second straight year, turning in $4,226.52 in contributions to earn a prize package that includes a $1,600 shopping spree at the soon-to-open Kukui‘ula Village in Po‘ipu.
