WAILUA — Sean Mamaclay finished in a tie with Levi Miyashiro, but took the 15-18 Championship title by two strokes following the final round of the Chica Ishii golf tournament, Saturday.
Mamaclay, a strong Kapa‘a High School team golfer during the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation season, ended the round tied at 82, but with a subtotal of 170 (83-87) to Miyashiro’s 172 (89-83), finished with a total 252 to set the pace for the 15-18 Championship flight.
Miyashiro, a golfer for Kaua‘i High School during the KIF season, finished with 254 followed three strokes back by Weston Moniz who carded a final-round 86.
That didn’t help the Kapa‘a High School multi-sport athlete who entered the final round tied at second place with Darren Valencia, both golfers carrying a 171 subtotal, a stroke better than Miyashiro.
Darren Valencia finished the final round at 91 for a 262 total good for fourth place followed by Gabby Saiki, the Kapa‘a High School’s leading wahine golfer in the KIF. Saiki, who celebrated her high school graduation Friday night, finished the final round with an 86 for a 269 fifth place total.
Daniel Miller and Kaiton Sawada battled for supremacy in the 15-18 “A” Flight, Miller settling the battle with a final round 96 to Sawada’s 97. Both golfers finished with a total 285 with Miller entering the final round a stroke behind Sawada, 189 to Sawada’s 188.
The tie, one of three in the tournament, was settled on sudden death playoffs, Miller taking two extra holes to come out on top.
“We had three ties for first place in three divisions,” said Ron Peeren, the Kaua‘i Junior Golf Association tournament chairman. “The 15-18 ‘A’ Flight, the 13-14 ‘B’ Flight and the 12 and Under Girls divisions all ended in a tie. Two were deiced on the first sudden death hole and the 15-18 ‘A’ Flight went two extra holes.”
Reyn Morioka, a newcomer to the Kaua‘i High School program this year, played conservative in the wind, but finished at the top of the 13-14 Championship flight, carding a 78 en route to a 239 total for first place.
He was followed by Pono Tokioka, carding a final round 80, two strokes off the pace, for a 253 total. La‘akea Warren finished with his best game in three outings to card an 87, but settled at third place on a 271 total.
Braeden Robley entered the final round of the 13-14 “A” Flight with a commanding six-stroke lead at 166, but despite finishing the final round second to Ken Miyata (172 subtotal), ended in first place with a 250 (79-87-84) to Miyata’s 255 (88-84-83) and Kai Adachi’s 258 (84-84-90) final totals.
Daezsa Tomas, the only girl in the 13-14 “B” Flight, dogged the leader board through two opening rounds, finishing third in the first round and second in the second round. She carded a top finish 95, her best game in the three-round series, seven strokes ahead of second finisher Micah Domingcel’s 102 to end in a tie with Domingcel at 292 for first place in the flight.
“There were a lot of close results as these ties would indicate,” Peeren said in an e-mail with the final results.
Matthias Davis filled in third at 320 (100-113-107), followed by Errol Lanning with a 330 (110-107-113) and Trevor Virga ending with a 369 (117-119-133).
K.C. Loo, after taking two first finishes in the first two rounds, dropped to second with a final-round 84, a stroke below Bryden Salvador’s 83. But with leads of four and two strokes, respectively, the one-stroke off the pace final round still gave him first place of the 12 Under Championship flight at 257. Salvador finished with a 262 (89-90-83) total followed by Trevor Kua at 282 (95-94-93).
Landen Ishida held a one-stroke lead heading into the final round of the 12 Under “A” Flight and carded a final-round 99 to take the flight on a 315 (104-112-99), four strokes ahead of Keith Jose (319-107-110-102). Randy Mizuno (356-135-116-105) and Michael Miller (378-126-124-128).
Tight competition is on the horizon between Na‘ea Oda and Kalau Tanaka-Pessamino in the 12 Under Girls division as Oda, trailing Tanaka-Pessamino by two strokes entering the final round, finished two strokes up at 99 for a 300 total, a tie with Tanaka-Pessamino’s final round 101. During the opening two rounds, each girl shared a first finish, Tanaka-Pessamino taking round one 103-106, Oda taking round two 95-96. Kawena Warren rounded out that flight on a 358 (125-119-114).
Reece Valencia topped the 10 Under Jr. Tees flight on a 271 (97-88-86) followed by Rilen Loo (281-96-90-95), Logan Gibson (313-112-100-101), Hi‘ilani Alana (316-114-105-97) and Douglas Sears (328-113-112-103).
Chica Ishii was one of four Kaua‘i golfers who founded the Kaua‘i Junior Golf program in an effort at promoting the sport among the younger golfers as well as helping them improve their skills in the game.
