WAILUA — The entire Kaua‘i Junior Golf Association field turned out as the first of three days of play in the annual Chica Ishii golf tournament got underway Saturday afternoon at the Wailua Golf Course.
Ron Peeren of the KJGA said the tournament will conclude with an awards ceremony next Saturday afternoon.
Wayne Miyata, a KJGA Age Group leader, said the Chica Ishii tournament is one of the biggest tournaments for Junior Golfers in the calendar year and all of its golfers come out to participate.
Ishii was one of four men that founded the KJGA in the 1960s. Ishii, Mitchell Ota, Toyo Shirai and Tom Tomimoto shared a desire to introduce youngsters to the sport and all had a willingness to help the young golfers develop their skills, states the KJGA Web site.
The success of the program is credited to the support it receives from parents, businesses, golf professionals and the KJGA officers and board members.
Peeren called on parents to become involved as helpers during the Chica Ishii tournament.
Tournament play continues from 12:30 p.m. Sunday and will start with the first group tee-ing off at 12:30 p.m. next Saturday for the wrap up.
The objective of the KJGA is to provide an environment where its members can enjoy the game of golf, progress at his or her own rate while promoting and preserving the traditions and integrity of the game.
This commitment has helped the KJGA build its reputation as being one of the finest in preparing junior golfers for the future.
