PO‘IPU — Weston Moniz, one of the steady golfers for the Kapa‘a High School golf team, finished a stroke up of Sean Mamaclay, a fellow Warrior golfer, to take the 15-18 Boys Championship at the Spring Classic, Saturday at the Kiahuna Golf Club.
Moniz, who worked his magic juggling between golf and volleyball during the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation seasons, finished with an 81 for the championship, a stroke better than Mamaclay (82).
Darren Valencia, one of the Kaua‘i High School golfers, filled in third place at 84 followed by Kapa‘a’s Justin Uegawa (87) and Kaua‘i’s Levi Miyashiro (89).
Daniel Miller II topped the 15-18 Boys “A” Flight with a 93, three strokes ahead of Kaiton Sawada who carded a 96.
“It’s getting closer to state golf time so this was a perfect time to get the Junior Golfers to Kiahuna so they can tighten up their game,” said Ron Peeren, one of the coordinators for the Kaua‘i Junior Golf Association that hosted the tournament.
Reyn Morioka, tying with Valencia at 84, topped the 13-14 Boys Championship followed two strokes back by Dylan Balisacan (86), who had a strong prescense with the Waimea High School boys golf team during the KIF season. La‘akea Warren filled in third place five strokes off the pace at 89.
Beth Tokioka was one of the gallery that followed Justin Tokioka to the top of the 13-14 Boys “A” Flight, his score getting the day’s low net honors at 80.
Kai Adachi followed at 83 with Ken Miyata (86) and Braeden Robley (88) filling in third and fourth places, respectively.
Micah Domingcil topped the 13-14 “B” Flight just a stroke ahead of Daezsa Tomas, the only female golfer in the field. Domingcil carded a 96 to Tomas’ 97 for first and second places, respectively.
Erroll Lanning, having problems with the hills leading to the No. 9 green, finished in a tie with Matthias Davis at 108 followed by Trevor Virga at 115.
With the completion of the Spring Classic, the Kaua‘i Junior Golfers prepare for the Chica Ishii Stroke Play Championships that will play May 30-31 and June 6 at the Wailua Golf Course.
Chica Ishii was one of the founders of the Kaua‘i Junior Golf Association and Peeren said all of the Junior Golfers will be out on the course for this tournament, noting that it is one of the bigger tournaments for the Junior Golfers.
