The Hawaiian Surfing Federation Kaua‘i held its fifth and final contest of the season during the weekend of May 9-10 at Prince Kuhio’s in Lihue.
In the Menehune 11 & under surfing division, Lucas Angulo came in first place, followed by Pierre Graham in second. Daniel Carter, Mainei Kinimaka, Titus Irons and Hunter Cabral rounded out the top six finishers.
In the boys’ 12-14 shortboard surf competition, Keola Carriera came in first place, followed by Lucas Angulo, Kaikea Elias, Christian Graham, Jay Michaels and Tommy Johnson.
In junior men’s 15-18 shortboard surfing, Keola Carriera again took home the top prize. He was followed by Troy Westin-Webb, Noa Howatt, Christian Graham, Elliott Leon and Makoa Carriera.
In the open men’s 18-24 shortboard surf heat, Aaron Swanson came in first. Christian Graham had another nice finish in second, followed by Britt Sanders, Troy Westin-Webb, Tabin Shamblin and Harrison Wray.
In the girls’ 17 & under shortboard surfing, Tatiana Westin-Webb finished ahead of the rest of the field. Brianna Cope, Erica Steiner, Maluhia Kinimaka, Jennifer Leon and Kiana Fores completed the top six.
In women’s 18 & over surfing, this time Cope got the top prize and Westin-Webb settled for second, followed by Steiner, Kinimaka, Lianna Patey and Malia Rimivicas.
In girls’ 17 & under longboarding, Steiner topped the rest of the competition. Patey, Fores, Westin-Webb, Jericho Paliracio and Vanessa Martinez completed the top six places.
In the open longboard competition, Les Tabuchi was the top rider, followed by Craig Balmores, Christian Potter, Warwick Gray, Jericho Paliracio and Kaikane Wong.
For senior men’s surfing, the top four finishers were led by first-place rider Richard Patey. Miguel Graham, Warwick Gray and Frank Evagues completed the list.
In grand masters surfing, Ed Yanagihara took the top honor, followed by Tabuchi, Keith Cabral, Balmores and Bernard Almeida.
For the Doyle surfing group, Colin Valheurdi had the best ride, followed by Ridge Floria, Sam Potter, Harrison Wray, Rad Floria and Patrick Thesken.
The HSF Kaua‘i does not just focus on surfing, as there were several other competitions throughout the weekend.
In the 14 & under bodyboarding division, Christian Deason was the winner. He was followed by Storm Magsanay, Trenton Olson, Keanu Malama, Patrick Thesken and Dalven Lee.
In junior men’s 15-18 bodyboarding, Alex Brown took the top honor with Matthew Holtzman in second. They were followed by Drake Humiston, Mana Wong, Noa Howatt, Axel Menezes and Jake Gonsalves.
The drop knee open bodyboarding was won by Sammy Morretino. Daniel Carter was second, followed by Tavin Brun, Adam Bice, Dalven Lee and Mark Iida.
In the launch open bodyboard, Brown got his second first-place finish, followed by Menezes, Malama, Magsanay, Drake Humiston and Holtzman.
A number of these riders and others have qualified to participate in the 2009 Burger King State Championships to be held at Ala Moana Bowls, beginning on Thursday, June 4. Their top three scores from their five competition totals determine who qualified.
