The Kaua‘i Red Raiders advanced to the HHSAA Division II Championship game by knocking off the Kaiser Cougars, 7-3 on Thursday.
Left-fielder Alyssa Carvalho led the offensive attack, going 2-for-4 with three RBIs and a run scored. Pitcher Wailana Borrero was 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI. Second-baseman Naja Pungan and shortstop Jessica Iwata each drove in a run.
Kaua‘i had nine hits on the day.
Borrero went all seven innings, scattering five hits and giving up two earned runs while striking out four.
After a scoreless first inning, Kaua‘i got on the board in the bottom of the second when Carvalho came through with a bases-loaded, two-out single through the right side to bring home two runs.
Kaiser quickly responded in the top of the third left-fielder Amy Austin doubled home a run and later scored on a Shereen Doi error to tie the game at 2-2.
With the score still knotted up in the bottom of the fourth, Kaua‘i opened the floodgates and scored five runs. Carvalho got it started with another RBI single. Pungan then brought her home with a triple to right-center field.
Borrero doubled to easily score Pungan and then came home on Iwata’s single. Iwata later scored on a wild pitch and error by the catcher to make the score 7-2.
Kaiser added a run in the fifth inning, but never threatened Kaua‘i’s now substantial lead.
The Red Raiders will now take on Waialua in the Championship game today at 5 p.m. Waialua topped Kamehameha-Hawai‘i 2-0 in its semifinal round game, giving up just two hits in the process.
Waimea wins one before losing in Consolation bracket
In the consolation bracket Waimea beat Aiea, 12-1, before losing 10-8 to Kalaheo in the fifth-place game.
In its victory, Waimea’s strong offense was led by catcher Taylor Ephan, who went 3-for-4 with two doubles and five RBIs. Tanisha Defabian was 2-for-4 with a triple, two RBIs and two runs scored. Mariebeth Watanabe and Krysta Kali scored three and two runs, respectively, while Ariel Mizumoto drove in two.
Michelle Koerte got the win, giving up just four hits in the six-inning contest, which was called due to the mercy rule.
In the next game, Waimea jumped out to a 2-0 lead, but gave up six runs in the bottom of the first inning and three in the second to create a large deficit it would not be able to make up.
Mizumoto was 3-for-4 with a homer and three RBIs. Ephan also homered and drove in three. Defabian was 3-for-3 with two runs scored.
Koerte took the loss.
