The Kaua’i chapter of the American Association of University Women will host a luncheon and tour of a private 3.5 acre botanical garden. Following lunch there will be a presentation of the group’s activities over the past year. There will also be a silent auction to raise funds for the scholarship coffers. This chapter is only a year old and so far has visited several schools to introduce students to alternative career paths. The group works with all students third grade and up. The national organization offers scholarships to women either wanting to attend or go back to school; receive legal help for women at work who encounter unequal pay situations or oppressive conditions. It also watchdogs public policy to ensure women get a fair shake in the federal legal system. The group is seeking new members, so bring a friend or two. Kaua‘i Pacific School is an independent Kindergarten to sixth grade school in Kilauea. Kaua‘i Pacific School has an extensive specialty program, an award winning arts program, marine science program and laptops for all students. The school has also recently received the Hawaii Schools Digital Media Grant, and a $20,000 scholarship grant from the McInerny Foundation for 2009-2010. Approximately 40 percent of students are on tuition assistance. All proceeds from this fundraiser go directly to building the school’s scholarship fund.

Hear journalist, instructor and former Kaua‘i resident Lucinda Fleeson on how Robert Allerton, Isabella Bird and Lucinda Fleeson found new meaning in a Kaua‘i garden. The presentation will take place at the NTBG Headquarters Campus in the Harrison Chandler Education Center at the end of Papalina Road in Kalaheo.
National Tropical Botanical Garden is a not-for-profit, non-governmental institution with nearly 2,000 acres of gardens and preserves in Hawai‘i and Florida. Its mission is to enrich life through discovery, scientific research, conservation, and education by perpetuating the survival of plants, ecosystems, and cultural knowledge of tropical regions. NTBG is supported primarily through donations and grants.
