Lorens Chan of Iolani captured the 2009 HHSAA David Ishii Boys Golf Championship on Wednesday with a one-over par 143 in his two rounds of action.
Chan shot a sizzling 69 on Tuesday, two-under on the par-71 course. He began the final round with a two-shot lead, but got off to a rough start and put up a 40 on the front nine. He no longer had the lead and was among a crowded group all within a few strokes of first place.
Chan regained his solid swing and came in with a 34 on the back nine, giving him a 74 for the round and leaving him two shots ahead of the field. Iolani teammate David Fink finished in second place after a 71 on Wednesday gave him a 145 for the event.
Kaua‘i’s Cory Oride, named a KIF All-Star on Wednesday, finished tied for third place after a round of 75 put him at 146 for the tournament. Oride was tied with Chan with nine holes to play, at the time sitting two shots off the pace.
Henry Park of Kealakehe and Bradley Shigezawa of Punahou also finished tied for third place with Oride.
Rounding out the top 10 were Baldwin’s Justin Keiley (147), Kamehameha – Maui’s Aaron Kunitomo (148), Moanalua’s Tyler Ota (149), Waiakea’s Daniel Koge (149) and Kamehameha – Oahu’s Alika Bell (150).
Chan and the Iolani team put up the low scores each round on their way to a team championship, totaling 601 during the two-day event. Moanalua finished in second place with 619, followed by Punahou at 624.
As a team, Kaua‘i came in sixth place with a total of 633 strokes.
