Kaua‘i Community College oceanography class (OCN201) went sailing out of Port Allen Harbor to see the Kaua‘i coastline along the Na Pali Coast and Kalalau Valley.
Noted experts on the coastline made the trip a learning experience. Dr. Steve Taylor, Earth science professor at KCC, explained many of the Na Pali’s unusual features to the 13 students of Dr. Carl’s ‘Science of the Sea’ class.
Students raved about how interesting it was to get this ocean perspective of the island and its coastline and then discuss it firsthand with experts on the boat. Among the wildlife seen that day were monk seal, spinner dolphin, green sea turtles and one of the last humpback whales of the season.
The field trip was made possible by Captain Andy’s Sailing Charters. Captain Ken and his crew made this an educational trip for many of the Kaua‘i-born students who had never seen the Na Pali from the sea.
