Most everyone on the island knows that the Waimea-Kaua‘i High matchup at Hanapepe Stadium at 2:45 p.m. today will decide the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation champion in baseball.
They also know that the champion will be the lone Kaua‘i representative at the Hawai‘i High School Athletic Association Division II state tournament in Honolulu next week.
But not all know that there is the potential for three KIF champions to be crowned today, if everything falls into place.
For example, if Waimea downs Kaua‘i High in boys volleyball beginning around 6:30 p.m. or shortly thereafter at the Kaua‘i High School gym, the Menehune will have clinched the second round and overall KIF championships.
Kaua‘i High stands at 1-1 in the second round, 3-3 overall, and needs to win tonight to keep any title hopes alive. Waimea is 3-0 in the second round, 7-0 overall.
The winner advances to the HHSAA Division II volleyball championships, on O‘ahu the second full week of May
And on another diamond, this one at Kapa‘a New Park, the Red Raiders girls softball team can clinch the second round and overall KIF title in softball, with a win over winless Kapa‘a.
Kaua‘i High is 3-1 in the second round and 9-1 overall, after splitting a pair of games against Waimea on Saturday and suffering their first loss of the year. Waimea is 3-2 in the second round and 6-5 overall, and needs help from the Warriors to have any hopes of forcing a playoff with the Red Raiders for the second-round title.
The final game of the KIF regular season in softball is at 5:30 p.m. today.
The KIF champ advances to the HHSAA Division II state championships, set for May 12 to 15 at the Patsy T. Mink Central O‘ahu Regional Park near Waipahu.
The Thursday issue of The Garden Island will have at least results of all today’s action.
And, just in case the triple threat today isn’t enough high school sports action for you, there is always the two-day, KIF championship track meet, where boys and girls team champions, as well as individual champions, will be crowned in the last regular-season track and field meet.
The trials are Thursday at 4 p.m., and the finals Friday at 4 p.m., at Vidinha Stadium. There is no admission charge for Thursday, but there will be an admission charge on Friday, league officials said.
