T.J. Kua, a freshman with the University of Hawai‘i golf team, finished with a 75, tying for 25th place at the 48th annual Western Athletic Conference Championships in Henderson, Nev.
Kua’s three over par 75 is the second best score for the University of Hawai‘i who settled into eighth place following the first round played at the Rio Secco Golf Club 7,332 yard par-72 course, Monday.
Sophomore Kamden Brakel, shooting an even par 72, leads the Hawai‘i team, the score getting Brakel a tie for 11th place.
Jared Sawada of Mililani finished eight strokes off the Hawai‘i pace at 78, a tie for 34th place, freshman Pono Calip of Hilo ended at 81 and a tie for 42nd place. Senior Cody Pewarchuk is at 85, a tie for 44th place.
New Mexico State University leads the nine-team field by carding a six-under par 282.
NMSU is followed by Fresno State (287), Idaho (288), San Jose State (292), Utah (293), Nevada (295), Louisiana Tech (296), Hawai‘i (306) and Boise State (307).
Travis Reid of NMSU and Grant Doverspike of Fresno State sit in a tie for first with a first-round 67.
