Sarah Kukino of Kaua‘i High School was the only second seed to win her division in the 2009 Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation qualifying tennis tournament, Friday.
Kukino, who earlier defeated fellow Raider, No. 3 seeded Shea Orial, met top seeded Lyndsey Tom in the finals of the girls singles. Kukino worked for her win over the Kapa‘a senior, 6-4, 6-3.
“Sarah was playing really well today,” said Kaua‘i High School Athletic Director Ross Shimabukuro. “It appeared that she was focused, and the match went well for her.”
Chas Okamoto, top-seeded boys singles player, had no problem getting past Island School’s Sam Dunham, 6-0, 6-0, according to figures from Kapa‘a High School Athletic Director and Tournament coordinator Greg Gonsalves.
Almost immediately following the tournament finals played at the Po‘ipu Kai Tennis Center, both Kukino and Okamoto were headed to the airport for a flight to an off-island weekend tournament, Shimabukuro said.
The top-seeded girls doubles team of Tiffany Lum and Jade Cano defended their KIF girls doubles championship with a 6-3, 6-2 win over the Island School team of Juli Blachowiak and Madison Duarte.
The top seeded boys doubles team of Harold Shimono Jr. and Darrell Nonaka took the title of that division with a 6-1, 6-1 win over the Island School pair of Logan Domingo and Jeremy Randolph-Flagg.
