Kustom Footwear leaders announced recently in a press release the signing of three-time World Champion Andy Irons to its team.
“Kustom and Andy Irons are a natural fit,” says Harry Truscott, general manager at Kustom Footwear. Andy will be a huge addition to our team.”
Besides the three World Titles and titanic battles with Kelly Slater, between 2002 and 2006, Andy won the prestigious Hawaiian Triple Crown (awarded to the most consistent surfer over the three North Shore events) four times, another major milestone in his career.
Irons, 30, who says he loves the simple life in Hanalei after years traveling the world to surf professionally, said he is stoked his feet will be looked after by a footwear brand that understands his need for diversity, durability, and style.
“We have had Andy on our short list of athlete’s for awhile,” says Pat Fraley, brand director at Kustom Footwear. “He is a major and welcome addition to the family.”
Andy joins a team that includes Joel Parkinson, Josh Kerr, and young prodigy Kolohe Andino. Among many other marketing initiatives, Kustom Airstrike is at the forefront of surfers’ minds, offering the richest single-maneuver prize purse in surfing, $50,000 for the craziest air.
Says Andy Irons: “For fifty gees, a kid will try and change the world.”
With Andy not on the 2009 WCT tour, he will be focusing his efforts on free-surfing the globe.
“It sure feels good to be free this year, to be able to focus on driving my surfing to a whole new level,” says Andy, who has already been granted a wildcard for the 2010 WCT season.
