PO‘IPU — Hamiha Arquette and Charleen Miguel shot their season-best scores Saturday, and Gabby Saiki equaled her season-best score.
Arquette and Miguel, golfing for the Waimea High School girls team, squealed when they found out they were within a shot of each other following the front nine at the final Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation golf match Friday at the Po‘ipu Bay Golf Course.
The pair went on to finish with 116 and 117 for Arquette and Miguel, respectively, and figured heavily as Waimea girls wrapped up the season by winning its match against the Kapa‘a girls that were led by Saiki’s 79. Melissa Kagawa led the Menehune ladies with a 108.
Alexandra Dorn and Shiyu “Star” Song finished with 137 and 144 for the Warrior wahine.
Rae-Lyn Morikawa, shooting as an individualist for Kaua‘i High School, carded the best score of the day with an 84, her second-best score of the season.
The Kaua‘i High School boys, locking up the KIF title earlier in the month, totally re-vamped its team lineup.
“You’re going to be surprised,” said Kaua‘i coach Ipo Yoshioka. “Our bottom five became our top five.”
That roster shakeup was meant to give the younger players of the 11-member Red Raider boys squad an opportunity to experience team play.
It also gave the team scoring to Kapa‘a High School with 323 followed by Waimea at 368 and Kaua‘i settling at 380.
Cory Oride finished with a one-over par 73 for his best score of the season as he shot as a Kaua‘i individualist. He was followed a stroke back by Wiley Yoshioka netting a 74 for the two best scores of the day.
Sean Mamaclay of Kapa‘a netted a 77 to lead the Warrior boys’ scoring followed by Weston Moniz finishing with a 78. Aaron Belmonte carded his best score of the season at 82 and Justin Uegawa equaled his season-best score at 86 to account for the Kapa‘a scoring.
Aaron Medeiros led the Waimea boys with an 82 followed five strokes back by Dylan Santos-Balisacan at 87, Jake Kuzen (96) and Shawn Tavares (103).
Darren Valencia led the Kaua‘i boys with an 83 followed by Jon Furusho at 93, Mitch Keep at 95 and Nathan Wong at 109.
With the completion of the KIF matches, the golfers tee off Saturday for two weeks of qualifying for the state match starting at noon at the Wailua Golf Course.
