Some of the Kaua‘i members of the Verizon Wireless Junior Hawai‘i Surf Team arriving home at Lihu‘e Airport earlier this week were themselves unsure exactly where they had finished in the Quiksilver International Surfing Association World Junior Surfing Championship.
They knew, though, that they had surfed well, five of six of them ending in the top 10 in the world in the contest, and content with their second-place finish (silver) to defending champion Australia.
Some things are certain: all but Kyle Galtes among the Kauaians survived six straight days of surfing to make it into Sunday’s final heats; going into those Sunday finals, Kaimana Jaquias and Dylan Goodale were both undefeated in the boys under-16 age division; and Nage Melamed, who ended the contest in eighth place overall, was 6-2 in her heats in the girls division.
Goodale ended fourth and Jaquias fifth in the boys under-16 division, Leila Hurst was fifth in the girls division, and Malia Manuel was sixth, in the double-elimination event.
