KALAHEO — Brooks Bethel scored 10 points and Tyler Fernandez fueled a fourth-quarter comeback as G-Unit downed Westside 26-18 in county 11-and-under boys’ basketball at the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center Monday.
Fernandez had two critical buckets for the G-Unit in the fourth period, as his first bucket knotted the contest 12-12, and his second gave the G-Unit a 14-12 lead, its first in the contest.
From that point, the G-Unit never looked back, and despite the strong efforts from Westside guards Briggs Agu and Chavis Garma, the G-Unit prevailed 26-18 in the second of two Monday games.
Garma had four points and Bobby Oliver added a pair for a 6-0 first-period lead for Waimea, but the G-Unit came back, outshooting the Westside 6-4 in the second period and holding the gray-shirts to just an Agu bucket in the third period while getting field goals from Tyrell Aipa-Rivera and Bethel to close the deficit 12-10 at the buzzer.
Fernandez led the G-Unit’s second-half charge where the blue-shirts outscored Westside 16-6. Aipa-Rivera finished with four, and Michael Booth came up with four in a balanced secondary performance.
Earlier, Jassem Cumlat netted a game-high 15 points, and Curren Dillberg added 10 points to lead Papalina to a 43-26 win over Team Central.
Matthew Cummings paced Team Central with 14 points, the low-post player getting 10 of his points in the final frame where Team Central outgunned Papalina 17-4.
The Monday-night win is Papalina’s second after taking a 35-23 victory over Westside Saturday. In that matchup, Dillberg took the lead with 11 points, followed by Cumlat adding 10 points and Kamea Palama-Alquiza adding six points.
Agu and Oliver topped the Westside effort with 11 and eight points, respectively.
In Monday’s win, Palama-Alquiza finished with seven points, Cumlat added four, with Kaeo Palama, Kai Lewis and Nate Herbig adding a pair apiece.
Following Cummings’ lead for Team Central, Keali‘i Colipano added seven marks, Solomone Mahapule and Lanakila Wilson each paired points, and Travis Ornellas contributed one.
Cheyne Kua, doing a good job of blocking the paint, finished with four points, and Oliver’s deuce rounded out Westside’s effort.
On Thursday night, the 11-and-under girls take the court at the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center, with the Westside Girls hosting the Lihu‘e Girls at 6 p.m., followed by Kaulupono taking on the Gee’s Angels at 7 p.m.
Earlier, Westside Girls picked up their first win with a 20-16 edge over Kaulupono, Saturday.
Brandee Burton and Tiana Apilado led that win on eight and six points, respectively, while Lauren Lagoc, Melia Okura and Jasmine Santella netted four points each for Kaulupono.
Teams in the league play twice a week, the boys taking the floor on Mondays and Saturdays while the girls have their turn on Thursdays and Saturdays, now through May 16, the league ending just short of timekeeper Nicole Palacio’s birthday.
