LIHU‘E — Six hundred HI-5 plastic recycling bins will soon be installed at county parks and neighborhood centers throughout the island.
The rollout of the blue, specially marked bins began last week and is expected to be completed by the end of next month, a county news release said Tuesday.
“The HI-5 recycling bins at our parks and neighborhood centers offer residents and visitors another opportunity to divert recyclables from our landfill, which is a precious resource,” said Mayor Bernard P. Carvalho Jr. in the release. “It is also a win-win situation for the general public and the county.”
He explained that all glass, plastic and aluminum beverage containers with the HI-5 label can be deposited in the new recycling bins, and the collected items are available to anyone on a first-come, first-served basis to take to a certified redemption center.
“The public has an opportunity to make some extra cash, while the county saves money by not having to hire a professional service provider to collect the containers from the bins,” said the mayor.
The new recycling bins were provided through a grant from the state Department of Health from funds generated by the deposit beverage container law.
