LIHU‘E — Kaua‘i High sprinter Kathleen Cadiente earned a state-meet-qualifying time along with Island School distance runner Pierce Murphy at the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation qualifying track meet, Friday night at Vidinha Stadium.
Kapa‘a High School, turning out a lot of student-athletes for the meet, swept both the girls and boys with accumulated totals of 105 points for the women and 139 marks for the boys in cold, windy conditions.
Waimea finished second with 68 for the girls, followed by Kaua‘i with 55 points.
On the boys side, Kaua‘i finished second with 61, followed by Waimea at 46, and Island School with 10 points.
Cadiente, topping the girls 100-meter dash, earned a state time with her 13-second-flat run, besting the state standard for hand timing of 13.1.
Pierce Murphy, coming off a strong performance at a California invitational, earned a state berth in the boys 3000 run with a 9:25 performance, bettering the state hand time standard of 9:50.
Jessica Iwata, making a strong showing in the girls 100 dash, 13.3 for a consideration berth, joined teammate Reanna Javinar for a run in the girls 200 dash, a season first for both girls.
They finished first and second, respectively, on times of 28.1 and 28.6, bettering the state consideration standard of 29.0 but falling short of the automatic-timing standard of 27.6.
Waimea’s Holly Kaiakapu earned a consideration time in the girls 100 hurdles with a first finish of 17.8 (18.3 consideration), but falling short of the auto standard of 17.0. She also finished first in the girls 300 hurdles (55.0) but missed the consideration standard of 54.9.
Kapa‘a sprinter Caleb Sarsona topped the boys 100 dash on a 11.2 run, bettering the state consideration standard of 11.3, but falling short of the auto standard of 11.1.
Kaua‘i sprinter Canaan Bernard pushed hard in the Boys 200 Meter Dash, finishing almost two seconds ahead of the second finisher on a 24.1 run.
But that fell 0.3 seconds short of the state standard of 23.8.
Similarly, Kapa‘a boys hurdler Joseph Velasco topped both the boys 110 hurdles (16.8) and the boys 300 hurdles (44.2), but fell shy of the state consideration standards of 16.3 in the 110 and 43.8 in the 300.
Kapa‘a athlete Tyler Cram cleared 5-10 in the boys high jump to earn a consideration height, and Kaua‘i jumper Allen Domingo had a long jump of 20-2 1/4, but fell short of the consideration standard of 20-4 3/4.
The KIF qualifying track meet continues Friday with hand timing starting at 4 p.m. at Vidinha Stadium. There is no admission charge for spectators.
