KAPA‘A — Waimea’s varsity boys volleyball team streaked to a 5-0 lead in the first game, and never looked back, crushing Kapa‘a in three games in just over an hour’s time.
The scores were 25-8, 25-13 and 25-11, and only at the beginning of the decisive third game did Kapa‘a attempt to make a match out of it, tying the game at 1-1 and again at 7-7 before Waimea put on the afterburners, holding the Warriors to just four more points before closing out the match-clinching game.
“It wasn’t the same Kapa‘a team” that battled the Menehune earlier this first round, said Waimea head coach Tony Magaoay.
Quinn Gonsalves was all over our unofficial score sheet, with six kills (four in the second game), four aces (including three in a row in game three when the Menehune pulled away) and three digs, with junior David Kaohelaulii adding six kills, three blocks and a dig. Jared Matsumoto contributed 17 assists, four aces, and two blocks.
Corey McDown knocked down the ace to clinch in game one and added three kills and a block.
Waimea is 3-0, and Kapa‘a fell to 0-3.
“We still gotta long way to go,” said Kapa‘a head coach Matt Gonsalves. “I think our inexperience is hurting us. I think most of it comes down to effort, and doing the little things.”
Among the little things, “communication is the main thing, and playing with intensity,” he said.
For Kapa‘a, Sean Shigematsu led the way with five kills and four blocks, Stephen Greenleaf had five kills and two blocks, and Kekoa Calipano added four assists, two blocks and two digs. Cody Abigania had five assists, two kills and a block.
“We played good,” Magaoay said. “We played lots of different players at different positions they had never played before, and they stepped up. I’m happy we won.”
Kapa‘a had a bit to brag about, stopping the Waimea junior varsity squad 25-19, 25-16 and 17-25.
Waimea plays host to Kaua‘i High at the Clem Gomes Gym on Wednesday, with junior-varsity action beginning at 5 p.m., with varsity action after, around 6:30 p.m. or so.
