WAIMEA — Kaua‘i second base Naja Pungan had six hits in nine at-bats, scored twice in helping the Red Raiders to its double-header sweep, 8-2, 6-4 over Waimea at the Waimea Canyon Park, Saturday.
In Game 1, Pungan finished 3-5 with a run scored, nailing two singles and a two-bagger. The No. 2 batter in the Kaua‘i lineup continued to finish 3-4 in Game 2 with a pair of singles and a two-bagger with two RBI in the second outing.
But Jessica Iwata, the Red Raider shortstop continued to be a force, finishing 3-5 in Game 1 with a pair of solo home runs, back-to-back in the third and fourth frames to deep leftfield.
That forced Shelly Koerte, the Waimea pitcher to pitch out on the formidable Kaua‘i senior.
Wailana Borrero, the Kaua‘i pitcher, allowed two runs in Game 1 on three hits while striking out five, walking two and hitting one batter.
In Game 2, Borrero finished with four runs crossing on five hits with four strikeouts, walking two and hitting one pitcher.
Offensively, Borrero finished with four hits, including a double and two RBIs in Game 2.
Kaua‘i finished the sweep behind 14 hits in Game 1, including the pair of Iwata homers, and 10 hits in Game 2.
Kawehi Ephan, moving from shortstop to catcher for Waimea, was joined by Tauina Tafiti, moving from catcher to first base, and Jazzy Bradbury to finish 1-3 each in Game 1, Tafiti and Bradbury scoring the two Menehune runs in the day’s opener.
Tafiti went 3-4 in Game 2 with four RBI. MarieBeth Watanabe and Krysta Kali each finished 1-3.
Ephan, getting two walks in three at-bats, scored twice in Game 2 with Kali and Ona Defabian each scoring once.
With the wins, Kaua‘i prepares to host Kapa‘a in a single game, Wednesday starting at 5:30 p.m. at the Isenberg Field.
