NAWILIWILI — There was no sleeping in for about 40 associates of the Kaua‘i Marriott Resort and Beach Club, Thursday.
It is the first week of Spring Break, Thursday was the Prince Kuhio holiday, but the associates raked, painted and hauled away bags of trash before Nawiliwili Park would become filled with park users.
“Nawiliwili Park is one of the highly-used parks,” said Eddie Sarita, coordinator of the county’s Adopt-a-Park. “It gets used by both visitors and residents alike.”
Chuck Brady, the multi-site human resources director for the Marriott, said normally the Marriott properties do park clean ups twice a year: once in celebration of Clean Up the World Day and the other in conjunction with Earth Day.
Sarita said the county provides the paint and other materials for the clean up and the Marriott crews provide the “sweat equity” in the collaborative partnership.
The Thursday clean up with done prematurely of Earth Day, but for good reason, Brady said.
A photography and video crew from the Marriott International corporate office in Washington, D.C. needed material for a presentation and was on island so the Kaua‘i Marriott associates pushed up the normal Earth Day clean up to coincide with the Kuhio Day holiday, Thursday.
The Kaua‘i Marriott Resort and Beach Club was selected as a recipient of the Marriott International Alice S. Marriott Award for Community Service, said Jolene Ogle of the Kaua‘i Marriott human resources office. Representatives from the Marriott will be flying to Washington, D.C. in mid-May to accept this award, one of three corporate awards.
“This is a tremendous honor for the Kaua‘i Marriott property,” said Tracy O’Conner, the video producer from the Marriott International office. “They were selected from the more than 3,000 Marriott properties located around the world.”
Megan Nadolski, the senior photographer from the Marriott International corporate office, said the material the crew were gathering during the park clean up will be used for the awards program, an in-house online Web site for Marriott, and possibly featured in other Marriott Web sites and printed material.
Marriott International’s commitment to community involvement began with its founders, J. Willard and Alice S. Marriott who were generous benefactors of the community, both financially and through personal effort, states the Marriott International Web site.
Over the years, they provided leadership for a variety of important civic endeavors while encouraging the company and its associates to be active, contributing members of the community
The Alice S. Marriott Award was created in 1992 to honor the legacy of Alice S. Marriott and her dedication to community service.
The award recognizes a Marriott business unit and its team of associates in recognition of excellence in corporate citizenship. It recognizes the desire of the Marriott company and associates to carry on the commitment of its founders by giving their energy, time and resources to help improve the lives of others.
The honored business unit best exemplifies Mrs. Marriott’s simply philosophy of “By generously giving our time, energy and resources, we enrich the live of others.”
In addition to the Alice S. Marriott Award, the Marriott International presents the J. Willard Marriott Award of Excellence and the J.W. Marriott, Jr. Award for Diversity Excellence.
