LIHU‘E — Between Ricky Davenport, Shea Shimabukuro and Jensen Koga, Kaua‘i allowed Kapa‘a only two hits in an 18-2 win on 15 hits under windy conditions and a good-sized crowd at Vidinha Stadium, Wednesday.
The win completes Round 1 with Kaua‘i High School settling in second place with a 3-3 record and Kapa‘a finishes 1-5. Waimea High School clinched the Round 1 title last Saturday with a double-header sweep of Kaua‘i to finish 5-1.
Kaua‘i lead-off hitter Dustin Prem gave an indication of the activity in the lumberyard, finishing the day a perfect 3-3, scoring twice and driving in an RBI.
Prem opened with a triple, scored on Kaylen Wakumoto’s RBI double, followed that with an RBI single to score Taran Tani in the hit-around in the first inning. Prem finished with a bunt single in the third.
Travis Koga, opening with an RBI single to score Wakumoto, also fared well, finishing the first inning with three RBI and adding another three in the third inning on a single.
Jamen Kealoha-Albarado finished with four RBI on a pair of doubles, and Kaua‘i catcher was stuck with the Mr. Magnet nickname as he was hit by a pitch on each of the three times he entered the batter’s box.
Kapa‘a notched its pair of runs in the third inning when Tanner Shigeta got a pair of RBI on a Red Raider error, scoring BJ Aiwohi, getting first on a fielder’s choice, and Mick Voigt who claimed first on a single.
Kaua‘i did its damage in the first and third innings, scoring nine runs on eight hits in the first and adding another nine runs on seven hits in the third frame before head coach Hank Ibia switched out his entire field.
The Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation next hosts the first game of Round 2 on April 4 when Waimea travels to Kapa‘a for a double-header starting at 10 a.m.
