LIHU‘E — Led by Melissa Kagawa, the Waimea High School girls golf team edged Kapa‘a High School by just three strokes Saturday.
Kagawa, finishing with a 99 on the day, was joined by Hannah Pleas (136) and Pualani Ragasa (147) to give the Menehune girls a 382 compared to Kapa‘a’s 385 at the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation golf match at the Puakea Golf Course.
Wiley Yoshioka of the Kaua‘i High School boys team rebounded from his last week’s 82 round at Po‘ipu Bay to finish with a 1-over par 73 in leading the Red Raider boys to its third straight victory with a 312 over Kapa‘a’s 369 and Waimea’s 377, the Waimea score equalling its performance last week at the Po‘ipu Bay Golf Course.
Yoshioka was joined by Cory Oride who finished five strokes off the pace at 78, Reyn Morioka (80) and Levi Miyashiro (81). Yoshioka’s game was the best for the boys and his season best after shooting a 77 in Week 1 followed by the 82 at Po‘ipu.
Sean Mamaclay shot his season best 78 to lead Kapa‘a followed by Justin Uegawa (90), Weston Moniz (96) and Kylan Holt (105). Aaron Belmonte made his first appearance for this KIF season to finish with a 104.
Dylan Santos-Balisacan finished with an 88 to lead the Waimea boys, followed a stroke back by Aaron Medeiros’ 89. Jake Kuzen finished with a 99 and Ka‘imi Kaohi-Miyashiro’s 102 rounded out the Menehune team scoring.
Shawn Tavares shot his season best 98 as an individualist at the Saturday match.
Kaua‘i’s Kelli Oride finished with the best score of the girls when the individualist finished with a three-over par 75, her season-best.
Gabrielle “Malia” Saiki, the lead girls golfer for Kapa‘a, led the Warrior wahine with an 80 followed by Alexandra Dorn (148) and Shiyu “Star” Song at 157.
Kagawa set the pace for Waimea followed by Pleas who almost escaped the No. 10 fairway hazard, but her second shot skimmed the surface of the water before settling in just off the far bank of the water hazard.
Pualani Ragasa finished with a 147 in the brisk winds and Quincee Parongao ended the day with a 160 as an individualist.
Hamiha Arquette was also playing a round, but was overcome by the ravine at No. 7 and picked up her ball.
Next week’s match moves to the Kiahuna Golf Course on Saturday, starting at 11 a.m.
